Flattened Earth, or: An Oblate Spheroid Ellipsoid –
This model is a replica of a scale model in Tony Wheeler’s 2008 work Solar System. Stretching from St Kilda to Port Melbourne, the collection of sculptures makes palpable the vast scale of the universe.
This 13mm diameter Earth is a favourite of BKK’s as it reminds architects (who rarely work at scales exceeding 1:1,000) of the wider context that we work within.
We’re also fascinated that the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but instead bulges at the Equator. This more accurate modelling of the Earth’s shape has led to an increasing precision in geolocation, an advance BKK seeks to leverage through our own digital modelling processes.
